Today, Mayor Gesie van Deventer visited the communities of Kylemore and Groendal to personally hand over title deeds to residents. This event marks a significant step in the Mayor’s ongoing campaign to transfer both historic and new title deeds to their rightful owners, moving away from a system where people remain tenants of the state. Since 2016, approximately 2500 title deeds have been successfully transferred to residents across the municipality.

Title deeds provide financial security and represent a significant asset to homeowners. They ensure ownership, dignity, and serve as a passport to economic participation.

Mayor van Deventer expressed her joy and pride during the handover ceremony: “It is truly an honour for me to give these residents the gift of owning their home. Ownership of your house creates a peace of mind that no money can buy. As a municipality, we will continue our efforts to transfer title deeds as quickly as possible. Empowerment starts with ownership and today I am overjoyed to be empowering these residents and their families.”

The Mayor also extended her gratitude to the Khaya Lam project of the Free Market Foundation for their ongoing support in expediting the process of transferring title deeds to residents. Their assistance has been invaluable in achieving the municipality’s goal of providing homeownership and economic empowerment to more residents.

The handover of these title deeds is a testament to the municipality’s commitment to improving the lives of its residents and fostering a community where everyone has the opportunity to own their home and participate fully in the economy.
