Statement by Executive Mayor Alderman Jeremy Fasser

This morning, I was joined by ward councillors from across our municipal area in signing a Memorandum of Understanding, reaffirming our commitment to assisting our most vulnerable and elderly residents in switching over to the new SASSA cards.

To ease this process, the municipality has made various venues available across Stellenbosch, ensuring that residents can access SASSA services closer to home. This initiative comes in response to significant delays experienced by SASSA, long queues at certain locations and the burden of long-distance travel that many residents have faced in obtaining their new cards.

While SASSA falls under the national Department of Social Development, we recognise the challenges our residents are experiencing. That is why we are stepping in to help as a Municipality – bringing essential services closer to the people and ensuring a smoother transition for those who need it most.

We encourage all eligible residents to make use of this opportunity. Together, we are committed to supporting our communities and ensuring that no one is left behind.
