On 11 October 2024, the Department of Community Development observed World Homeless Day for the second time in Stellenbosch. Portfolio Cllr X. Kalipa opened the event, highlighting the need to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness and encouraging community participation in finding solutions.

The event provided 177 beneficiaries with access to vital services, including breakfast and lunch, a pocket service directory, healthcare screenings, and information on support services from local providers.

Stellenbosch Municipality is committed to supporting the homeless year-round through ongoing efforts like our annual funding to the Stellenbosch Shelter, ensuring access to safe shelter and social services. Additionally, our Give Responsibly campaign encourages residents to contribute in ways that make a lasting impact, supporting sustainable solutions to homelessness.

Homelessness is a global issue, affecting cities and towns across South Africa and beyond. While it is not unique to Stellenbosch, we are dedicated to working tirelessly to assist and support the most vulnerable members of our community.

We extend heartfelt thanks to all the stakeholders who made this event possible: Department of Social Development, Department of Health, Stellenbosch Museum, Law Enforcement, SAPS Social Crime Unit, Local Empowerment Development, SA Sheltersuit Foundation, Stellenbosch Homeless Forum, Local Drug Action Committee, Stellenbosch Night Shelter, Right2Care, Grace Anatomy, U-turn Homeless Ministries, Feeding-in-action, and the many community and religious leaders who offered words of hope and entertainment.

Together, we are creating a more supportive and caring community.
