Stellenbosch Municipality Warns Residents Against Fraudsters

The Stellenbosch Municipality is once again warning residents about individuals posing as municipal officials to gain access to homes. Senior residents are especially being targeted. These fraudsters attempt to enter homes under false pretenses in the name of the municipality and use the opportunity to steal from residents.

It is important to note that the municipality will never attempt to gain access to residents’ homes to count items such as wall plugs or taps. Water and electricity meters that need to be read are mainly located outside of homes, and municipal workers do not need access to the inside of a house to read those meters. Only in certain rare cases will officials need access to premises, and they must be in possession of their official municipal identity cards. This includes ad hoc visits to check the functioning of prepaid electricity meters.

All residents are encouraged to first contact the municipality to verify the identity of the person if they feel unsure or unsafe before granting access to their premises. Workers must carry proof of identity. Feel free to call 021 808 8215 or send a message to our WhatsApp line at 076 951 0768 to verify the identity of a municipal employee.

Welcome

Stellenbosch lies roughly 50 km to the east of Cape Town and is - after the Mother City - the oldest town in South Africa.

The 900 square kilometres municipal area is internationally renowned for its beautiful environment, many places of interest, wine farms, street cafes, restaurants, quality wines, historical buildings and excellent educational institutions.

The major portion of the area is utilised for agriculture (mainly wine production) and it includes the major towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek as well as settlements such as Klapmuts, Koelenhof, Kylemore, Johannesdal, Pniel, Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Jamestown and Raithby.
