Today, Executive Mayor Gesie van Deventer has officially written to the Chairperson of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) to express strong opposition to Eskom’s proposed 40% tariff increase. The Mayor highlighted that this drastic increase would impose unjustifiable constraints on both residents and businesses within our municipal area. Moreover, it would have a devastating impact on the poorest and most vulnerable members of our community, exacerbating existing challenges.

This proposal threatens the economic stability and well-being of our citizens, and we must stand together in voicing our concerns.

Stellenbosch lies roughly 50 km to the east of Cape Town and is - after the Mother City - the oldest town in South Africa.

The 900 square kilometres municipal area is internationally renowned for its beautiful environment, many places of interest, wine farms, street cafes, restaurants, quality wines, historical buildings and excellent educational institutions.

The major portion of the area is utilised for agriculture (mainly wine production) and it includes the major towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek as well as settlements such as Klapmuts, Koelenhof, Kylemore, Johannesdal, Pniel, Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Jamestown and Raithby.
