On this wet and rainy Mandela Day, the municipality, in collaboration with various stakeholders, seized the opportunity to honor and celebrate some of the unsung heroes in our communities. Councillors were invited to nominate individuals within their wards who are making extraordinary efforts to improve the lives of those around them. These dedicated community members work tirelessly through initiatives such as sport, education, feeding schemes, entrepreneurship, community projects, cleaning programmes, and soup kitchens.

Recipients from various areas including Jamestown, Pniel, Raithby, Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Klapmuts, and Franschhoek gathered today at the Stellenbosch Town Hall. They came together not only to receive their Community Hero medals but also to share their inspiring stories.

Congratulations to all of today’s honorees! We recognise that community work is driven by passion and dedication rather than the desire for recognition. Nonetheless, we are sincerely grateful for the incredible contributions these residents make to our communities, and we are delighted to have had the opportunity to celebrate their efforts today. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to making our communities a better place for all.

Over the years the unauthorised and unattended excavations on the properties in Bird Street (Erven 7575 and 7576) have been in the news constantly due to its unsightly nature and the risks associated with environmental health and safety conditions, and which claimed the lives of two young adults in 2022.

Over the years the Municipality has continuously attempted to engage with the owner to pursue the development of the subject property, and consequently the excavations were never rehabilitated in anticipation that the property would eventually be developed.

As no formal commitment could be obtained to develop the property, the Municipality proceeded to serve notices and demand that the property be rehabilitated to its former state. The owner did not comply with these notices and all avenues were exhausted to address the matter amicably.

With no apparent progress to facilitate the development of the property, and no conceivable probability that the owner will address the unauthorised excavations and/ or proceed with plans to develop the property, the Municipality instituted formal legal proceedings to address and resolve the unauthorised excavations.

The matter was placed on the court roll and was set down to be heard on 9 July 2024. The property owners elected to oppose the application of the Municipality at the very last minute, after which the court postponed the hearing to 17 October 2024 in order to permit all parties to submit responding papers to the court.

Welcome

Stellenbosch lies roughly 50 km to the east of Cape Town and is - after the Mother City - the oldest town in South Africa.

The 900 square kilometres municipal area is internationally renowned for its beautiful environment, many places of interest, wine farms, street cafes, restaurants, quality wines, historical buildings and excellent educational institutions.

The major portion of the area is utilised for agriculture (mainly wine production) and it includes the major towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek as well as settlements such as Klapmuts, Koelenhof, Kylemore, Johannesdal, Pniel, Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Jamestown and Raithby.
