🌧️⚠️ Heavy Downpours Expected, Wemmershoek Dam Being Carefully Monitored

Due to the predicted heavy rains this weekend, we are issuing an alert for the area downstream of the Wemmershoek Dam. The highest rainfall is expected between 1 PM and 3 PM on Saturday, 27 July 2024.

Given these conditions, it is likely that the sluice gate will open to Stage 4 (105 m³/s). Depending on the rainfall intensities, the sluices may be opened to higher stages, potentially reaching Stage 5 (133 m³/s) by late afternoon.

We urge all community members to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Please stay informed by monitoring warnings and updates from your local municipalities.

✅ Safety Measures:
1. Ensure that all drainage systems around your property are clear and functioning.
2. Move valuable items to higher ground if you are in low-lying areas.
3. Avoid crossing rivers and streams during the peak rainfall period.
4. Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies in case of evacuation.
5. Keep contact numbers of local emergency services handy.

Your cooperation and proactive measures can significantly reduce the risk of harm and damage. Stay safe and alert.

Welcome

Stellenbosch lies roughly 50 km to the east of Cape Town and is - after the Mother City - the oldest town in South Africa.

The 900 square kilometres municipal area is internationally renowned for its beautiful environment, many places of interest, wine farms, street cafes, restaurants, quality wines, historical buildings and excellent educational institutions.

The major portion of the area is utilised for agriculture (mainly wine production) and it includes the major towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek as well as settlements such as Klapmuts, Koelenhof, Kylemore, Johannesdal, Pniel, Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Jamestown and Raithby.
