With the recent heavy downpours, a close eye is being kept on the Wemmershoek Dam. Stellenbosch Municipality, Cape Winelands District Municipality, and the National Department of Water and Sanitation are in constant communication with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, ensuring the dam level is closely monitored and managed.

The dam is not currently overflowing, and water is being released in a controlled manner to minimise the effect of rising water levels downstream. As of 08h00 this morning (18 July 2024) the dam was 98.5% full.

We reiterate that there is no cause for alarm and that the dam is being closely monitored and managed.

Celebrating Our Community Heroes on Mandela Day

On this wet and rainy Mandela Day, the municipality, in collaboration with the Stellenbosch Academy of Sports, seized the opportunity to honor and celebrate some of the unsung heroes in our communities. Councillors were invited to nominate individuals within their wards who are making extraordinary efforts to improve the lives of those around them. These dedicated community members work tirelessly through initiatives such as sport, education, feeding schemes, entrepreneurship, community projects, cleaning programmes, and soup kitchens.

Recipients from various areas including Jamestown, Pniel, Raithby, Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, and Franschhoek gathered today at the Stellenbosch Town Hall. They came together not only to receive their Community Hero medals but also to share their inspiring stories.

Congratulations to all of today’s honorees! We recognize that community work is driven by passion and dedication rather than the desire for recognition. Nonetheless, we are sincerely grateful for the incredible contributions these residents make to our communities, and we are delighted to have had the opportunity to celebrate their efforts today. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to making our communities a better place for all.

Welcome

Stellenbosch lies roughly 50 km to the east of Cape Town and is - after the Mother City - the oldest town in South Africa.

The 900 square kilometres municipal area is internationally renowned for its beautiful environment, many places of interest, wine farms, street cafes, restaurants, quality wines, historical buildings and excellent educational institutions.

The major portion of the area is utilised for agriculture (mainly wine production) and it includes the major towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek as well as settlements such as Klapmuts, Koelenhof, Kylemore, Johannesdal, Pniel, Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Jamestown and Raithby.
