On Youth Day, our Executive Mayor had the honour of being a guest speaker at the Annual Social Justice Walk, hosted by Professor Thuli Madonsela. This powerful event aims to raise awareness around student challenges and student debt, while generating crucial support for students from underprivileged backgrounds to complete their studies.
The Mayor delivered his address in front of the iconic Old Luckhoff High School on Banhoek Road – a historic institution and site that has endured and shaped generations of leaders and changemakers in our community.
Reflecting on his own upbringing in one of Stellenbosch’s poorest areas, the Mayor spoke passionately:
“For many learners, even today, the goal is simply to pass matric. We must inspire them to aim higher – to pursue diplomas and degrees, and believe in their future. Financial support is critical so they too can access one of the best universities in the country, right here on our doorstep.”
The Mayor highlighted how educational success brings hope to young people and acts as a powerful tool in addressing anti-social behaviour and gangsterism in our communities.
This annual walk on Youth Day reminds us of the ongoing need for justice and opportunity, especially for those who face systemic barriers.
The Mayor was joined by Stellenbosch residents, students and renowned local figures including Professor Thuli Madonsela and Stellenbosch University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deresh Ramjugernath.
Together, they walked for change, justice and opportunity.
