In celebration of Human Rights Month, Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser today joined residents of Cloetesville to mark a significant milestone – the handover of more than 25 title deeds, officially making them homeowners. This momentous occasion ensures that these families are no longer tenants of the state but private property owners, securing their rights and futures.
“Private property rights are fundamental to economic empowerment, stability and security,” said Mayor Fasser.“ Title deed ownership provides residents with peace of mind and the opportunity to participate more fully in the economy. For many, this is the culmination of years of waiting and today, we celebrate this achievement together.”
The Mayor was joined by Mr. Temba Nolutshungu of the Free Market Foundation South Africa, a key partner in assisting the municipality with expediting the often-complex process of registering and transferring deeds to their rightful owners. “This is a lengthy and challenging task – tracking down original deeds, verifying ownership and ensuring proper registration is no small feat. But the reward is invaluable,” Mayor Fasser added.
Stellenbosch Municipality has also conducted information sessions and workshops to educate new homeowners on the significance of title deeds. “A title deed is more than just a document; it is a gateway to financial opportunities,” said Mayor Fasser. “It empowers families to build a secure future for themselves and their children.”
The Municipality remains committed to upholding and protecting private property rights and will continue working with partners like the Free Market Foundation to ensure more residents can experience the benefits of homeownership.
