25 August 2021
Today, 25 August 2021, Mayor Gesie van Deventer launched the brand new Klapmuts Taxi Rank. The Mayor was joined by leaders and representatives of the Franschhoek Taxi Association as well as the Congress for Democratic Taxi Associations (CODETA).
The Klapmuts Taxi Rank has long been a need of the community, as identified during the IDP public participation process. The breakdown of reliable and safe rail transportation across South Africa, has led to a much higher demand for taxi services.
The new rank is centrally located right next door to the Klapmuts Multipurpose Community Centre that was also constructed by the municipality and opened its doors in 2019. The rank is within a short walking distance of the Klapmuts Primary School and the Klapmuts Clinic.
The construction of the facility was carried out in 2 phases. The first phase comprised the implementation of the civil works and the second phase comprised the construction of buildings and top structures. The municipality made available a total of R20 million for this new facility, that will serve the Klapmuts community for generations to come.
The new facility includes undercover holding and loading areas for taxi’s, waiting areas for commuters, administrative buildings, meeting rooms, ablution facilities and facilities for a caretaker.
Mayor van Deventer was delighted to hand over the keys to the representatives of the Franschhoek Taxi Association – the body that covers the Klapmuts area. “Within the coming months, we will also be launching the new Kayamandi Taxi Rank as well as the Franschhoek Taxi Rank. This forms part of our ongoing efforts to improve public transportation services across the municipal area. This is another wonderful day for the community of Klapmuts and I implore the community to take full ownership of this facility. Please take care of it”, said the Mayor.
